QUARTET v4.0

Theatrical Stage Design

The set design for the performance of QUARTET v 4.0 is a site specific installation designed for the unique sci-fi adaptation of dissident playwright Heiner Muller's 1981 original Quartet. An elevated platform floating over the auditorium seating and wrapped in a translucent plastic cube is the centerpiece encapsulating the action of the play. Interactive cameras follow the actors and broadcast real-time video images, which are processed and projected onto screens outside the cube. Lights on the floor and on the cube's edges dynamically interact with the actors’ movement.

The design process was the epitome of a virtual-office context, coordinating the work of visual artists scattered across the globe - from New York and California to Europe. The project applies simple, inexpensive, off-the-shelf materials to create a beautiful, sophisticated, and elegant environment.
